National Women Build Week, held May 5-13, is a nationwide initiative of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program developed in partnership with Lowe’s.

This year’s theme, “The Build Generation,” reflects the event’s goal to recruit and train women volunteers, as well as welcome the next generation of Habitat Women Builders – young women, ages 18-24 – to help support Habitat’s mission to create affordable housing. Women volunteers in Greenbrier County worked with the Sams family on their new Habitat house. Lowe’s is providing Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity a $5,000 Lowe’s store gift card, as well as preliminary volunteer training to support this Habitat for Humanity Women Build home.

On Saturday, dozens of volunteers worked alongside Patricia Sams to lay the foundation and prepare for the coming weeks of construction on her new Habitat home. On the eve of Mother’s Day, laying the foundation to her new home inspired hope for her family and her future. After falling on hard times, Patricia found herself jumping from job to job, renting whatever she could afford. A grandmother of three, her lack of housing prevented her from spending any quality time with her grandchildren. Additionally, as she aged, she became more and more concerned with her future, “I…worried that I would get older and be homeless.” One day, she was asked if she had ever spoken with Habitat for Humanity regarding a home. She called Almost Heaven, interviewed, and was confirmed as the next partner family. “When I was told I would be a partner with Habitat, I was just numb and didn’t really have a reaction. Two days later, I was looking in the mirror and started crying and saying, ‘Oh man, I’m going to have a home!’ Finally, before it’s too late, before the grandchildren get older… Nana can make cookies and memories.”

Patricia’s adult daughter, Shannon Fogus of Covington, VA, was on hand to help. “My family and I are truly touched and grateful for the opportunities that Habitat for Humanity bring to hard-working members of the community. My mother is a determined, ambitious woman, who without this opportunity may not have become a homeowner.” Several employees of Lowe’s of Lewisburg volunteered on Saturday, as well. Tammi Lloyd of Roane County has worked with Lowe’s for four years. Sharing her thoughts, she said, “I think it’s great because women are doing it. I mean, look at them smiling. . .they’re learning stuff they’ve never done before. The lady we’re helping out can say, ‘Women built my house!’” Melanie Osborne, a five year Lowe’s employee from Orient Hill, reflected, “Men think, ‘Women can’t [build a house],’ and some of them treat you like that until you can earn their respect. [Women Build] teaches you how to be a jack-of-all trades, more independent. You can do anything [men] can do. . .once you take your first small step you build confidence to take the next step. Finally, you make it where you’re not afraid to take chances.” Volunteering from the community, Anne Canterbury of Renick, WV, expressed her motivation to become involved, “I love the idea of women creating houses for women. Everybody needs a house and to empower women to be able to do that is very awesome. I’m a homeowner and I can always use that kind of experience.”

Additionally during National Women Build Week, Almost Heaven Habitat turned dreams into reality by closing on a home for Pamela Anderson and presenting her with the keys to her new home in Pendleton County, West Virginia. While Pamela celebrated Mother’s Day in her new home, the event was far from traditional. Pamela found herself fulfilling a maternal role to Anthony (13) and Jordan (11) when their parents were sent to prison in 2002. After taking the boys in, she soon realized she needed to get them away from the crime and drug ridden streets of their neighborhood in Baltimore, MD. After packing up and moving to Pendleton County, Pamela and the boys found a small two-bedroom apartment. As the boys grew and the apartment fell into disrepair, the heating bills and Pamela’s concern for the family soared. Pam’s job as a cashier at a local convenience store was barely enough to cover the family expenses, putting her in a dire straight. Pam’s friends encouraged her to apply for a Habitat home, shortly after Halloween. Just before Christmas, Pam was approved as the next Partner Family. “To own our own home in a safe neighborhood, have our own bedrooms, for my kids to have a yard, my own washer and dryer… this really is a dream come true for us.”

Lowe’s, underwriter of Habitat’s Women Build program, has committed more than $1.3 million to National Women Build Week in support of 275 participating affiliates. National Women Build Week is one of the major initiatives supported through Lowe’s five-year, $20 million pledge to Habitat. As the underwriter of the Women Build program since 2004, Lowe’s conducts “How-To” clinics at stores to teach women construction skills, enabling them to support Habitat projects across the country. Almost Heaven Habitat and Lowe’s of Lewisburg, WV hosted a “How-To” clinic to prepare women volunteers to build in Greenbrier County.

“Lowe’s has been the proud sponsor of Habitat’s Women Build program since 2004,” said Marshall Croom, chairman of the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. “Women Build encourages women from all ages and walks of life to pick up their hammers and build affordable homes alongside local families. Lowe’s salutes all the women volunteers who take time to build this week and values the difference Lowe’s and Habitat are making in the lives of families across the nation.”

The U.S. Census Bureau reports more than 12 million children—one out of every six—are living in poverty in the United States, where more than 70 percent of Habitat’s U.S. houses are built in partnership with women heads-of-household. In West Virginia, more than thirty percent of families are in need of affordable housing. Habitat’s Women Build program recruits, educates and inspires women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable houses in their communities. Since the inception of Habitat’s Women Build program in 1998 more than 1,900 Habitat for Humanity Women Build houses have been constructed in partnership with low-income families.

The “NISSAN Love To Be Green Build” event took place between 11 AM and 3 PM at the Lewis Nissan dealership located at One Plaza Center, across from The Raleigh Mall.

The wall-framing event was a part of Almost Heaven Habitat’s Earth Day Build, with construction of the home scheduled to be completed in time for a dedication the week of April 23rd, in celebration of Earth Day. A major sponsor of the house is Nissan, who is providing grant funding towards the construction of the new home being built in White Sulphur Springs, as well as a new Nissan Frontier truck that was presented on Saturday and will be used to support their home building and repair operations in Greenbrier, Pendleton and Pocahontas Counties.

The day began with a welcome by Michelle Connor, CEO of Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity. Sarah Abrams, Public Relations Manager for Lewis Automotive shared, “Lewis Nissan is so excited to be partnering with an organization as great as Habitat for Humanity. We are happy that the walls for Colette are being framed here today!”

Colette then shared her thanks to those who had gathered to help for the day. “You hear, see and read about people being homeless, and during those times you never ever think you would be in that position. This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to go through and to see how it affects my son is even worse.” Colette was born and raised in Greenbrier County and works at a convenience store as a cashier. She is the mother of three children: two grown children and an 8-year-old son, Deshaunte. A few years ago, they had to move out of their home due to circumstances beyond their control. She couldn’t afford to rent a new place, so they had to move in with her sister in a small 2 bedroom apartment in which Colette and Deshaunte share a bedroom.

Following a brief ceremony, members of the Lewis Automotive team and volunteers from the community set to work framing the interior walls for Colette’s new house, working under the leadership and direction of two of Almost Heaven Habitat’s Construction Crew Leaders. Dean Cook of Nissan Sales reported, “I went out and hammered several nails and then when I took a break I got hammered with sales. What goes around comes around. It was a fantastic ways to start a weekend. . .helping someone else.”

A highlight of the day for the Almost Heaven Habitat affiliate was the presentation of the keys to a new Nissan Frontier truck. “We started out the day with 150 2x4s and 25 pounds of nails, and by the end of the day we had all of the walls framed,” Michelle declared. Chad Hopkins, General Sales Manager of Lewis Automotive, presented Michelle Connor with the keys to a new Nissan Frontier truck, explaining, “Good things come to people who do good things. We’re glad we could help.”

For an organization that routinely presents keys to new homes to their Partner Families, it was touching for Almost Heaven Habitat to receive the keys to a new truck. “We have never had the financial resources to purchase a brand new truck for our Habitat work,” Michelle shared.

This past fall, Nissan Americas announced a significant expansion of its longstanding partnership with Habitat for Humanity International with a $2.5 million donation. Nissan’s vision is to invite all its stakeholders to participate in the partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Point-of-sale materials in dealerships and communications to consumers will convey information about Habitat activities. Consumers who visit the Nissanusa.com website can click through to Habitat’s site to make a donation or find volunteer opportunities across the country.

Tom joined representatives of Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity in making visits to all five West Virginia members of Congress or their staff to share his story.

With an extremely lean proposed federal budget, many programs that support Habitat’s work are under threat of being cut making it extremely urgent that Habitat’s voice is heard by decision-makers.

Habitat for Humanity understands the precarious situation our federal, state and local governments are in with regards to curbing spending to help alleviate debt. At a time when our leaders have to get creative with the nation’s budget and most entitlements are being cut, Habitat for Humanity advocates for programs that offer a creative one-time solution for low-income families in need of affordable housing.

Unlike government entitlement programs, Habitat for Humanity provides a hand-up not a hand-out to low-income families. By providing hard working, low-income families the means to build and buy, rehabilitate or repair homes, the Habitat model is empowering individuals to break the cycle of poverty. Low-income families that become homeowners become more self-sufficient, depending less on state and federal assistance programs which ultimately decrease the need for government entitlement programs.

Creating low-income homeowners also offers broad economic benefits. Increased homeownership benefits the local economy by increasing consumer spending, providing tax revenues and fees, and growing businesses and jobs. Building and rehabilitating houses requires additional employees, goods and services from the general economy. “Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity strives to boost the local economy by hiring area residents, buying building materials from companies in our service area or nearby counties, and subcontracting to local small businesses,” expressed Michelle Connor, CEO of Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity.

Tom Kesterson was a fitting spokesman for the Habitat on the Hill event because he knows first hand how much the work of Habitat for Humanity impacts vulnerable populations and the local community. Tom Kesterson served in the US Navy from August 1971 to October 1989 as a Yeoman with legal expertise. He joined the Navy during the Vietnam War. After his military career was cut short due to debilitating injuries to his legs and back, he returned to his home in West Virginia and raised two children: Tom Jr. and Kelly.

Upon returning to Pendleton County, Tom worked as a janitor at the local elementary school and took on other various odd jobs, but his back and leg injuries continued to worsen, ultimately leaving him totally disabled. Sadly, Tom’s marriage ended in divorce and he lost everything that was dear to him.

Tom lost hope and found himself out on the street and homeless. “I felt like nothing good could ever happen to me again,” shares Tom. “I thought it was over.” Tom was living in a small motel room with no cooking facilities and paying nearly half of his disability income for the lodging and prepared foods. He was literally struggling to exist.

A Veteran’s Administration social worker referred Tom to Habitat for Humanity, and after repeated encouragement to apply, he was approved for a new townhouse right before Christmas. Tom has moved out of the motel and into a more suitable transitional apartment as he prepares for homeownership. He has completed the 13-week Financial Peace University class and has found new fellowship at a local church. Tom is scheduled to close on his new townhouse at the end of March.

Issues discussed during the meetings included the National Service programs of AmeriCorps and VISTA, as well as the Self-help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP). Almost Heaven HFH has used National Service volunteers over the years to build the capacity of their staff to effectively deliver services to the community, and SHOP funds have assisted with land acquisition and infrastructure development. The townhouse Tom is purchasing was assisted with AmeriCorps volunteers and SHOP funds.

Tom also joined in the discussion about weatherization services being offered to existing homeowners. Almost Heaven HFH is in a pilot program funded by the US Department of Energy, exploring ways to accelerate and expand weatherization efforts for low-income families nationwide.

Habitat’s national Veteran’s Initiative was shared with our elected officials. The five pillars of the Initiative are: Build, Educate, Mobilize, Employ and Celebrate. Throughout Habitat’s history, its affiliates have served veterans. The Veterans Initiative will strengthen the good work already happening, draw on successes and lessons learned, and support affiliates through advocacy and networking with government and veterans groups. Recently, affordable housing solutions for veterans and military members have become a priority in U.S. policy.

“I think all of these programs need to be looked at and supported,” Tom shared repeatedly with members of congress and their staffers. “I’ve been there in need of help, and Habitat was there for me. I was a homeless veteran. Don’t cut these programs; they need to be supported and funded, because there are others like me out there that Habitat needs to help.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, Tom!

Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity has served Eastern West Virginia for 23 years providing safe, decent, affordable homes to hundreds of families. To date the organization has built and sold 120 new homes and performed repairs on over 350 additional homes, all in partnership with low-income families in need, making their dream of homeownership a reality. Habitat for Humanity partners with volunteers and low-income Partner Families to build or renovate houses that are then sold to the partner families at no profit, with no interest charged on the mortgage.

Franklin, WV (February 7, 2012) – Representatives from Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity will join hundreds of Habitat for Humanity leaders, supporters and advocates in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 8-10 for Habitat’s sixth annual advocacy and legislative conference titled, “Habitat on the Hill: Build Louder. Serve Louder.”

“Habitat on the Hill provides a great opportunity for us to take our message of the need for safe, decent affordable housing directly to our elected officials in Washington, D.C.,” explained Michelle Connor, CEO of the Almost Heaven Habitat affiliate. “In addition to Hill visits, we will spend a couple days in conferences and panel discussions, and two of us from Almost Heaven have been invited to present about our work with Veterans.”

During Habitat on the Hill, participants will emphasize how crucial AmeriCorps and VISTA members are to Habitat and will urge legislators to protect the Corporation for National and Community Service that administers the programs. Each year, more than 100,000 volunteers are recruited, managed and trained by AmeriCorps members serving with Habitat for Humanity. VISTA members helped to develop resources and programs that have generated more than $5 million for local house building efforts.

Among the many topics to be discussed, participants will share with Congressional representatives Habitat’s national initiative that offers volunteer, employment and housing opportunities to veterans and military families.

“This level of engagement in Washington will create a better understanding of and stronger support for Habitat’s work and the critical federal programs that have assisted Habitat affiliates in serving families across the country,” said Liz Blake, senior vice president, Government Affairs at Habitat for Humanity International. “This is our opportunity tackle some of the policy and legislative issues that will be key to serving more families in 2012.”

Speakers at the three-day conference will include: Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del.; Col. David Sutherland, special assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Elizabeth Littlefield, president and CEO of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation; and Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International.

Joining in the celebration were over 30 Habitat for Humanity volunteers and supporters from the community and around the state.

Colette Godfrey was born and raised in Greenbrier County and works at a convenience store as a cashier. She is the mother of three children: two grown children and an 8-year-old son Deshaunte. A few years ago, they had to move out of their home due to circumstances beyond their control. She couldn’t afford to rent a new place, so they had to move in with her sister in a small 2-bedroom apartment in which Colette and Deshaunte share a bedroom.

“You hear, see and read about people being homeless, and during those times you never ever think you would be in that position. This was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to go through and to see how it affected my son is even worse,” confessed Colette. “Now I have true hope for a brighter future for me and my family. It is wonderful to break ground on my new home!”

The event kicked off Almost Heaven Habitat’s Earth Day Build, with construction of the home scheduled to be completed in time for a dedication the week of April 23rd, in celebration of Earth Day. A major sponsor of the house is Nissan, who provided grant funding towards the construction of the new home, as well as the means for Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity to purchase a new vehicle from a dealership. Almost Heaven HFH selected Lewis Automotive, located in Beckley, WV, as their partner dealership, and Sarah Abrams of Lewis Automotive was on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony. “Nissan Foundation has a history of supporting Habitat for Humanity, as well as green and environmentally-friendly initiatives. Our Nissan dealership [,Lewis Automotive] is no exception. This will be our first Habitat for Humanity build, and we are very excited about the opportunity to frame the interior walls for this house in the coming weeks,” reported Sarah Abrams, who serves as Public Relations Manager in her family’s 4th-generation dealership.

Others participating in today’s groundbreaking program included: Rev. Greg Scott, Pastor of First Baptist Church of White Sulphur Springs; Donna DeHart, Director of Development for Habitat for Humanity of West Virginia; Lloyd Haynes, the Mayor of White Sulphur Springs; and Katie Ickes, Executive Director of the Greater Greenbrier Chamber of Commerce.

“Often, we are called into matters that are controversial,” shared Lloyd Haynes, Mayor of the City of White Sulphur Springs, “but Habitat for Humanity is not at all controversial. Habitat is good for everyone!”

Nissan is funding grants and providing Nissan vehicles to 10 Habitat affiliates that make commitments to sustainable construction practices; Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity is one of those 10 affiliates selected to receive a grant and a vehicle to support its operations. “Nissan’s financial support enables us to help serve the Godfrey family, and we are extremely grateful to have a partner like Nissan that shares our commitment to building sustainable communities,” said Michelle Connor, CEO of the Almost Heaven Habitat affiliate that serves Greenbrier, Pendleton, and Pocahontas Counties.

Throughout this partnership Nissan and Habitat for Humanity will share a common goal: to build affordable, sustainable homes in partnership with families in need of decent housing. Nissan-sponsored Habitat homes will be equipped with many “green living” features, including low-flowing plumbing fixtures, programmable thermostats, energy-efficient fluorescent lighting, high-performance windows and ENERGY STAR® appliances. These eco-friendly amenities align with Nissan’s Green Program, which supports efforts to reduce the company’s impact on the environment.

Nissan’s partnership with Habitat dates to 2005, following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Nissan donated 50 Nissan Titan trucks to assist Habitat’s response efforts in the Gulf Coast and mobilized employees to assist in home building. Since 2006, Nissan employees have helped to build more than 30 homes across the United States. Outside the U.S., Nissan’s funding supported the construction of 15 homes in Haiti following the devastating earthquake in 2010. To date, Nissan employees have logged more than 56,000 volunteer hours building homes with Habitat for Humanity.

About Nissan Americas

In the Americas, Nissan’s operations include automotive styling, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing. Nissan is dedicated to improving the environment under the Nissan Green Program and was recognized as an ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2010 and 2011.

Rupert, WV (November 11, 2011) — Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity officially kicked off its Veterans Initiative today, bringing members of the community together to assist with a critical home repair for 79-year-old veteran Lonzo (“Lon”) Martin. During a noontime ceremony at Mr. Martin’s home, members of the Almost Heaven Habitat team were on hand to announce the program and explain the first project in the program.

“Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity has been serving veterans and their families for many years. That has not changed. However, we discovered that in recent years we have been serving even more veteran and military families, and we have decided to take a directed approach to serving them,” explained Liz Warner, Chief Operations Officer for the Habitat affiliate that serves the Eastern WV counties of Greenbrier, Pendleton and Pocahontas. “As part of our new effort to proactively reach out to Veterans, we are developing a closer relationship with VA clinics and other veterans groups to ensure more veterans like Mr. Martin, who have fallen on hard times and have fallen through the cracks, get back on their feet and not only live their lives with dignity and respect, but also feel a valued member of the community.”

Affordable housing solutions for Veterans and military members have become a priority in U.S. policy over the last year, and Habitat for Humanity is a key organization in providing those solutions. Almost Heaven HFH has received an infusion of financial support to launch their program, specifically grant support from The Home Depot Foundation’s Repair Corps program.

“We are committed to ensuring that every veteran has a safe place to call home,” said Kelly Caffarelli, president, The Home Depot Foundation. “Habitat for Humanity has its finger on the pulse of the needs of homeowners in communities nationwide, and we know that through our joint Repair Corps program, we’ll be able to identify and help veterans whose homes are in critical need of repair.”

Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity is one of thirty-six Habitat affiliates in 21 states across the country that have been selected to participate in an $800,000 pilot program managed by Habitat for Humanity International. Repair Corps grants will pay for needed home repairs from insulation and weather stripping to the installation of wheelchair ramps and renovated bathrooms and doorways to accommodate disabled veterans. Larger repairs such as roofing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and structural improvements will also be available. The program is designed under the same model as new homes built for Habitat families where the veteran will repay the zero interest loan necessary for these repairs, which is then deposited into a revolving fund to assist additional families in need of decent housing.

“The beauty of this program and its initial funding from The Home Depot Foundation is the revolving loan fund that will result, so that we can continue to serve even more veterans and their families in the years to come,” remarked Michelle Connor, Chief Executive Officer of the Almost Heaven Habitat affiliate. Contributions to the Veterans Initiative from members of the community are welcomed and can be put to immediate use.

Introducing Lon Martin during the kick off ceremony at his home was Karen Armstrong, Almost Heaven Habitat’s Director of Family Services. Karen shared the background of Mr. Martin’s military service to our country, as well as the story of his family and married life. Lon’s wife of 18 years, Edna, passed away earlier this year due to a massive stroke.

Lon has wonderful memories of his years with Edna in their home and it grieves him even more to think that he can’t do anything to make it better. “I just can’t thank you enough for even considering helping me in this way,” said Lon tearfully. “Edna was my life and it seemed as if everything was falling apart without her. You have brought hope and a ray of sunshine back into my life. Thank you!” The roof on his house leaks in several places and the ceiling is beginning to pull apart in two of the rooms. The repair work that began today on Mr. Martin’s home will continue over the coming weeks.

The Solar Decathlon, first held in 2002, is a biennial collegiate competition open to the public. Visitors can tour the houses, gather ideas to use in their own homes and learn how energy-saving features can help them save money today.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.

The purposes of the Decathlon include educating student participants and the public about the many cost-saving opportunities presented by clean-energy products, and demonstrating to the public the opportunities presented by cost-effective houses that combine energy-efficient construction and appliances with renewable energy systems that are available today.

Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity staff, Michelle Connor, John Connor, Fred Laird and Karen Laird; Habitat for Humanity supporters from Pendleton County, Bob Bittner and Lynn Lewis along with Habitat’s Home Energy Rater, Ben Meredith from Harrisonburg, VA attended the event to learn more about energy efficient construction practices, solar thermal and solar PV panel installation, natural day lighting strategies, water conservation, grey water treatment, smart design and sustainability.

“The trip was very worthwhile and it exceeded our expectations,” said Michelle Connor, Executive Director of Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity. “Many of the technologies are ones that are easily purchased from local building suppliers and we are eager to implement some of them into our current energy-efficient building and repair practices,” continued Connor.

The Solar Decathlon event not only showcases the houses designed by the competitors, but also provides other attractions geared towards homeowners, consumers and building industry professionals. The “Energy and Your Home” interactive display area included a wind turbine and demonstration on solar technology and efficient lighting as well as Energy 101 and “home energy assessment” tips. The event also provided free workshops on topics such as industry trends in sustainable building design, solar systems for residential installation and building efficient, affordable homes.

Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity has made a commitment to energy-efficient construction and green building practices. All of the homes the organization builds in partnership with low-income families meet not only Energy Star standards, but also the advanced energy efficient certification of EarthCraft. The organization seeks to be a model green builder in the affordable housing industry and to be an advocate for the growing green building movement in West Virginia. Volunteers and homeowners from Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity will join in celebrating the milestones as part of events being held worldwide to mark World Habitat Day.

Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity is among the more than 2,300 Habitat affiliates worldwide that have made this milestone possible, having built 120 houses in Pendleton, Pocahontas and Greenbrier Counties since its founding in 1988.

We are happy to have helped Habitat for Humanity reach this important milestone in bettering communities across the country,” said Michelle Connor, Executive Director. “With continued support of our sponsors and volunteers, we’ll address affordable housing needs in Greenbrier, Pocahontas and Pendleton Counties.”

This year Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity embarked on a Neighborhood Revitalization program in Greenbrier and Pendleton Counties. The organization began the revitalization work in a White Sulphur Springs neighborhood with the completion of the first all women build house in May. The revitalization work will continue through 2013.

The milestone houses represent the steady increase in Habitat for Humanity’s scale and scope to help more families in need of decent, affordable housing. In 2005, Habitat celebrated its 200,000th house. Six years later, Habitat for Humanity has more than doubled that number through new, rehabilitated, repaired and improved homes.

“It is a testament to the power of what God can do when people come together to build homes, communities and hope,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “I am so grateful to all of the volunteers, donors and advocates who share our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.”

In Kenya, Habitat for Humanity will complete the 500,000th house on Oct. 3 in partnership with families who were displaced after post-election violence erupted in the country in late 2007. That same day, volunteers will raise the walls on Habitat’s 500,001st house in Paterson, N.J. The house will be built in one of the inner-city neighborhoods where Paterson Habitat for Humanity has been continuously building since 1984.

Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organization that operates in nearly 80 countries, including all 50 states in the United States, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity’s help, a family somewhere in the world improves its housing situation every 7 minutes of every hour of every day of the year. In 2010, Habitat for Humanity served a record 74,960 families in need.

Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity is one of 125 Habitat affiliates across 38 states and the District of Columbia that was selected to participate in this year’s program. The organization will be granted $5,000 for each home built to standards that address energy efficiency, water conservation, improved Indoor air quality standards, and durability & bulk moisture management.

“The generosity of The Home Depot Foundation will help Habitat for Humanity sustain its energy efficient and green-building practices,” said Michelle Connor, Executive Director of Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity. “We are in the business of building and repairing homes with families in need and Home Depot is a great partner to have in this endevour”

Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity has been committed to building energy efficient homes since 2000 when it abandoned traditional stick frame construction. In 2009, the organization made a commitment to build 100% of its homes to meet not only Energy Star standards, but also the advanced energy efficient certification of EarthCraft. To find out more about Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity’s green building practices and commitment go to www.almostheavenhabitat.org/green_build.

Since its creation in 2008, the Home Depot Foundation’s Partners in Sustainable Building program has demonstrated that the initial costs of building to a green standard are modest and can be recovered by the homebuyers through savings on utility, repair and replacement costs over the course of a home’s mortgage.

“The Home Depot Foundation has long believed that green building is smart building,” said Kelly Caffarelli, president of The Home Depot Foundation. “In today’s economic climate, energy efficient building practices, including sealing windows and doors, insulating walls and ceilings, and installing ENERGY STAR appliances and systems, are more important than ever, because they can actually put money back into homeowners’ wallets. Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity demonstrates that smart building ensures the long term financial and physical health of families.”

“The Partners in Sustainable Building program has created excitement about the benefits of building to a recognized green standard within Habitat for Humanity,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “With the support of The Home Depot Foundation, we have a great opportunity to bring the economic benefits of sustainable building to our homeowners all across the country.”

Va., (August 29, 2011) — This summer seven local youths dedicated 8 weeks of their summer vacation to serving Pendleton County by participating in Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity’s Summer Internship Program. Many traded trips to the beach and higher paying jobs for long days in the sun serving local families in need.

Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity launched their Summer Internship Program five years ago in an effort to engage local youth in community service projects.

“We wanted to tap into the often overlooked potential of youth bringing new ideas and energy into our organization,” says Michelle L. Connor, C.E.O. of Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity. “We learned a lot from these young adults over these past eight weeks and they learned a good bit about construction practices, volunteer management, responsibility and leadership.”

The interns worked for eight weeks performing various hands-on tasks including working in the office, registering volunteers, counting inventory in the warehouse, and physically building houses on a handful of the construction sites throughout Pendleton County. There were long hot workdays and plenty of hard work, but there was also time for reflection and making new friends.

“These young adults were really amazing,” says Evan Zuverink, a political science and communications graduate student at Marshall University, who spent his summer working with Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity through the Community Works of West Virginia leadership program. Among other roles, Evan coordinated the summer internship program for the organization. “To have such a vested interest in their community at their age is all but unheard of. These seven individuals truly embody servant leadership and I am proud to have worked with them this summer,” continued Evan.

The future of the Habitat movement and our community lies with young people,” says Connor, “Our efforts today should be directed toward fostering service to others in our youth. These young folks will one day be the leaders of our community. Two of the Summer Interns served in the program last year – Emma Van Scoy and Ryan Niblins. We appreciate their renewed commitment.”

This was the fifth year of the program and it was open to highly motivated young adults ages 17-25. Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity is already planning for its 2012 Summer Internship Program.

Throughout its 20 -year history, Almost Heaven Habitat fort Humanity has hosted more than 15,000 students to build and repair homes in Pendleton County. During this time, students have helped to raise more than $2 million to pay for construction. This year alone, over 1,000 students have volunteered their time to help build 5 new homes, renovate 2 existing homes, and perform repairs on 14 additional homes.

The seven youth adults that participated were Emma Van Scoy, a sophomore at Pierpont Community and Technical College; Amanda Villalobos, a sophomore at Marshall University; Ryan Niblins, a sophomore at West Virginia University; Rachaud Maddox, a sophomore at Fairmont University; Amy Wimer, Alumni of Shepherd University; CJ Malcolm, a Freshman at South Branch Community and Technical College; and Tim Windett, who graduated from South Brach Career and Technical College this past May.
